Bottom

5 juni – 4 juli

Bottom” is an unceasing sense of wrongness and sorrow. “Bottom” might be understood as a position of submission but it can also speak of a capacity to receive, to ingest and absorb. “Bottom” is the vantage point from which to question what constitutes the Top in our world.

-Kah Bee Chow

For this exhibition, Chow has worked with close attention to the particularities and proportions of the three-storey medieval Krognoshuset building. The lines and arrangements on the top floor and in the basement refer to and draw from the existing curvature and arches of the architecture.

As part of her process, Chow has made latex casts of the building’s brick exterior, the material is applied with a brush directly onto the surface a layer at a time to build up an impermeable membrane. They register the different kinds of bricks forming its walls, their physical, material texture, as well as the weather and rain staining its exposed layers during the process.

In her practice, Chow has often worked with forms of protective architecture for the body such as shields and shells. Here, they take shape in varying forms and compositions, inhabiting and speaking to the building.

Questions around bodily protection and safety have become a constant in our everyday lives over this past year. As these considerations burrow into our reflexes, they also become more inescapably, inextricably tied to the asymmetries which order our world*.

*The protective materials industry experienced a sharp rise in demand for protective equipment during the pandemic- items such as masks, gloves – donned to protect the wearer’s body from infection, leading to record-breaking profits for these firms. For example, the world’s leading latex glove manufacturer, Top Glove’s net profit rose by 2030% in the fourth quarter of 2020, a company which has also repeatedly come under scrutiny for alleged labour abuses. At every turn, one can ask: who pays for our protection and safety?
